Responsive Web Design – The Why and The How

responsive web design

The purpose of your website’s design is to create substantial positive, enticing, satisfying experiences for your visitors to induce them to try out your product or service offerings. If you are like most businesses, your website was laid initially designed to look good on a desktop or laptop, since smartphone usage began to rise only in the last few years.

Smartphones are the future of web

Statistics indicate that of the more than 3.37 Billion Internet users as of end of 2015, some 1.86 Billion (or around 55%) are smartphone users. At the rate these gadgets are being consumed, it is just a matter of time that smartphones will overtake, if they have not overtaken, PC and desktop users.

Everybody knows that consumers use their smartphones to surf the Internet, to access websites to inquire and acquire products and services. So if your website was designed on a desktop or laptop, it is most likely that your web design format is not view-able on a smartphone screen, or if it is, it will need a lot of on-site adjustment like zooming or shrinking of images and text to fit the small screen. Something smartphone users will not have the patience to do!

Responsive web design makes websites respond

Responsive web design is a smart approach in web development that allows the site design configuration to adjust its contents, structure and images to automatically fit the size of the user’s device. In other words, the web design is constructed in such a way that the website is accessible in the same quality of form and content irrespective of size and orientation of the device used.

The website “responds” automatically to whatever the device may be. Who would imagine that smartphones will take over the role of laptops? Who is to tell when a smaller or doubly smarter gadget would come after the smartphone loses its sex appeal?

Plan for responsive web design

There are actually three types of design that address the various devices in the market. Aside from the responsive web design where the site automatically responds to fit, there is the adaptive web design where the site will adapt to fit a predetermined set of device and screen sizes. And then, there is the custom web design where separate designs are made for the different devices.

Why Responsive Design?

Among the three design options mentioned, certainly a responsive web design offers the most advantages. Here are some of them:

  • Maximized mobile market. Accept it or not, it’s going to be a mobile market!
  • Positive user experience. This is all about the essence of branding, creating the smoothest visitor experience of your site, assuming the other elements are well crafted.
  • Increased conversion rates. If your site does not open on a mobile device, or opens only to test the visitor’s forbearance, your visitor won’t stay a second. But if the design adjusts to fit his device allowing him to navigate smoothly till he finds what he wants, it’s a site owner’s as well as customer’s dream!
  • Cost effective. With only one site to build, one SEO campaign to run, same HTML served to all devices, lesser volume of work, resources are maximized.

With all these points factored in, wouldn’t you want to have your website designed “responsive-ly”?

Great Post. I agree that responsive design is must for the growth of the business. Most of the people are using different devices to operate. So it is really necessary that the design you are choosing must be compatible with that device.
